Ronda Matson: Songs
Five and Forty
(Ronda Matson)
The moments fly, but beg no mercy.
They’ve built a lifetime on their own.
Close your eyes and you’ll remember
all the seeds that we have thrown.
Met by the wind and rain and sun,
they braved the sorrows of the day.
Some grew strong and held the beauty,
grew so high to show the way.
Don’t sing a song of stormy weather
‘cause in the end it passes by.
Sing instead of five and forty,
dance and know the reason why
I love you more than oceans rolling,
summer’s breeze or birds that call.
I still hear tomorrow’s promise
tapping on our bedroom wall.
I barely see the lines that touch you,
still can hear the baby’s cry.
When darkness falls it echoes ‘round me
though the grey we can’t deny.
But if you ask, would I want it back?
My heart would find the answer, no.
Because this life has much to teach us,
many places yet to go.
Don’t sing a song of stormy weather…
A moment ago I was holding your hand.
I kissed you, we both said we would.
For a second, I thought that the day would not go away,
that my flowers were there
for good.
